How to Choose the Right Kitchen Island Size

A kitchen island has to balance workspace, seating and circulation. The largest island that physically fits is not always the best choice if it makes cabinet doors, appliances or walkways harder to use.

Kitchen Island Width and Depth

Island dimensions should relate to the available floor span and how you plan to use the island. Sink, cooktop, storage and peninsula layouts may need different minimum sizes.

Leave Enough Aisle Clearance

The work side needs enough room for people to move, open drawers and use appliances. If stools are included, the seating side also needs space behind them for sitting and passing.

Plan Seating and Stool Spacing

The calculator estimates counter width per stool and includes your selected overhang and clearance behind the seating area.

Kitchen Island FAQ

How wide should a kitchen island be?

The best island width depends on seating, sink or cooktop needs, and the available cabinet span. The calculator combines these measurements to create a practical starting size.

How much aisle space should I leave around a kitchen island?

Aisle needs vary by kitchen, but many layouts work best with roughly 36 to 48 inches of clear space, especially on active work sides.

How much space does each kitchen island stool need?

A common starting point is about 24 inches of counter width per stool, though wider stools may need more room.

Can I check an island I already own or plan to build?

Yes. The calculator includes an option to enter an existing island width and depth and compare it with the selected aisle and seating targets.
